Hotel Rustico
Hotel Rustico is a fairly new backpackers hotel, located 200 meters to the north of “El Cruce”, the intersection of Malpais and Santa Teresa, where the road first comes down from Cobano to the beach. It’s on the right, just across the first river. Nestled at 200 meters from Playa Carmen beach, which is one of the best surf spots in the Malpais/Santa Teresa, this inexpensive hotel also features a tour office, restaurant, and internet. The hotel offers most amenties required for a peaceful, comfortable and hassle free stay, all this while keeping their prices low. The beach where it is housed has been designated as a Blue Flag beach, which means it has perfect conditions for nature conservation. Other than this, the area is known to offer consistent surf breaks, lush greenery and all conveniences (restaurants, supermarkets etc).
Designed as a rustic, back to nature stay option, Hotel Rustico is made from wood and provides spacious rooms complete with fans, refrigerator and a couple of double beds in each room. There are also three additional disabled friendly rooms. There is 24 hour security and a parking area is available for guests’ vehicles.
Nestled in a quiet and laid-back neighborhood, Hotel Rustico is surprisingly spacious and has a bunch of people offering friendly and personalized service. The rooms can be a lit dark and dingy though they are all clean, neatly appointed and well furnished. However, on the whole the hotel offers great value for your buck. It isn’t far from most convenience establishments, is easily accessible to the area’s tourist spots and is as unpretentious as a nature lodge should be. It isn’t a fancy hotel in the garb of a ‘nature resort’. Hotel Rustico is a true earthy retreat that offers the best of Costa Rica’s natural splendor coupled with the comfort of a vacation retreat. Don’t expect anything fancy here- it caters mostly to backpackers. However, if you aren’t expecting too much from your accommodation other than basic comforts and a well connected location, then it’s a good bet.
Attractions and Activities
The Malpais and Santa Teresa area’s perfect weather and beautiful natural setting make it the hotbed for several attractions and activities including bird watching, nigh safari tour, canopy tour, deep sea fishing, hiking, horseback riding, quad biking, scuba diving, snorkeling, sport fishing, surfing, yoga, hot air ballooning, wellness services, Cabo Blanco tour, Curu Nature Reserve and Torutuga Island tour, a trip to Montezuma waterfalls and much more. For those too lazy to go adventure hunting, there are beaches all over the place where you can walk aimlessly or simply get a gorgeous suntan to flash it back home or even relax in the hotel’s surroundings to the cries of howler monkeys and chirping birds. Services can be arranged through Rustico or by contacting local tour operators who are all located nearby in the Malpais/Santa Teresa area.
